Artists in Residence Progress Update
We will regularly update the progress of our artists in residence
Monday 7th June 2010
The first three residencies began today!
Sue Lawty (wwwclothandculturenow.com) is the artist focussing on Spiritual Space and she has already held sessions with patients, families and staff at the hospital and will return later in June for more work.
Emma Hermann Smith (www.edinburghsculpture.org), the Plaster room artist is coming to the hospital in mid June. She will work with patients in one of the wards designing plaster moulds.
Maria Smith and Je Ahn of Studio Weave (www.studioweave.com) who will be focussing on the Playrooms will be coming to the hospital at the start of July to begin work with the Play specialists and patients on producing ideas for more exciting and flexible playrooms. We hope that we may be able to use some of these ideas in the existing hospital as well.
Thursday 24th June
Sue has now come back with the most amazing pieces of work done by the children following a simple idea which Sue has developed from her World Beach project before her first workshop with the children she went to east Lothian and gathered a box full of amazing pebbles and stones from one of the beaches. Normally she would ask people to work in sand, but that would be too tricky in the wards!! So instead children made their pictures on boards and she photographed them…they give so many varied thoughts on what interests children artistically… and it is interesting how they use the shapes and colours. Sue said that they seemed very captivated too by the textures!
Friday 11th July
Can’t believe the progress in such a short time.
Emma has been visiting regluarily as she lives very close to the hospital and has developed several casting activities with the children. This begins to give her ideas for some of the art which could be incorporated by casting in the new building, and she has also reached out to the staff to find out the distinctive elements of the hospital and particular areas which are close to their hearts and they would like to see somehow reflected in the new building.
Friday 23rd July
Really excited now…we are starting to organise framing for the artworks the children did with Sue, talking with staff and children about the bits of the hospital which Emma might look to include in her future work and Maria and Je are coming in on Monday to do the most amazing Workshop sessions with Katzia, Maria’s sister playing her clarinet for musical games and creation…I think this will be truly amazing! There are three workshops planned…but it is quite difficult as we do not know who will be available to attend them. Of course we would hope there would be no-one in the hospital at all on Monday as that would mean there were no sick children…but sadly I doubt that will be the case. Just hope that some of the children who do have to be in hospital will be able to go to the sessions and work with Je and Maria who are such good fun and so creative.
