Stockbridge elephant auction takes place this weekend

A 30-strong herd of handcrafted elephants will be auctioned off this weekend (11/12) to raise money for two Edinburgh charities.

Each of the colourful paper mache animals will be available to bid for from 2pm this Sunday at the LifeCare Centre, Cheyne Street.

One will also be gifted to the winner of the children's competition, in which children in Stockbridge took part in a game to spot the odd thing out in shop windows.

Raffle tickets will be on sale for £1 for a chance to win a host of fantastic prizes including a Janet Adam bowl and an hour-long massage donated by Balance Physiotherapy.

Funds from the fantastic elephant jumboree raised will be donated to Edinburgh's Sick Kids Friends Foundation (SKFF) and LifeCare.

Stockbridge independent businesses including restaurants, cafés, and shops have clubbed together as a community to raise vital funds for the charities. Each of the shops and businesses have decorated their elephants and showcased them in their windows on the run up to the charity auction.

Organisers Rhona Johnston and Eleanor Spens have also successfully completed a host of fundraising activities including a Christmas craft fair, the elephant themed ‘Jumboree' and a kids ‘elephant trail'.

Rachel McKenzie, community fundraising manager at Sick Kids Friends Foundation, said: "We would like express our appreciation to Eleanor and Rhona for all of the time and hard work they have dedicated to raising much needed funds for SKFF.

"The local businesses involved have done a terrific job of individually decorating the elephants and I'm sure they will be a success on Sunday.

"Donations make up a vital part of the funds we raise here at the SKFF. It is important to us to pass on our sincere appreciation to the kind hearted members of the Stockbridge business community who have put so much effort into helping SKFF."
